9/11 Memorial Unveiled in Chesterfield, NJ, and National Day of Service Commemorated in Milpitas, CA

CHESTERFIELD, N.J., Oct. 7, 2024 ~ On September 11, 2024, Sewa International, a non-profit organization, unveiled a 9/11 memorial in Chesterfield, New Jersey. The special ceremony was held to honor the victims and heroes of the tragic terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001. Over 350 people attended the event, including local officials, state senators, assembly members, and first responders.

The monument was unveiled by State Senator Latham Tiver, Assemblywoman Andrea Katz, and Sewa International USA board member Sridhar Talanki. It symbolizes the Twin Towers and serves as a tribute to the resilience and unity of the American people. The event also featured the unveiling of two other monuments representing the Pentagon and Flight 93.

During the ceremony, Lt. Col. Eric J. Tolska, a key figure in the 9/11 rescue efforts, reflected on the courage and challenges faced on that fateful day. State Senator Latham Tiver emphasized the importance of embodying values of care and pride daily while Assemblywoman Andrea Katz urged everyone to reconnect and be kind.

Mayor Matthew Litt expressed his gratitude for the memorial and its role as a space for reflection and unity. Sandesh Kamath, Sewa's South Jersey Chapter Coordinator, highlighted the power of unity in his speech saying "When we come together, work together, and support one another, nothing is beyond our reach."

The memorial was a collaborative effort between Sewa's South Jersey Chapter and Chesterfield Township. It was built in just 23 days with generous contributions from donors and sponsors representing a collective effort from veterans, first responders, and local organizations.

A dedicatory plaque at the entrance of the memorial provided an overview of its significance and highlighted the importance of remembering and honoring those who lost their lives in the tragic events of September 11th.

In addition to unveiling the memorial in New Jersey, Sewa's Bay Area Chapter also partnered with AmeriCorps to host an event in Milpitas, California, to recognize the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. Milpitas Mayor Carmen Montano, Vice Mayor Evelyn Chua, Assembly Member Alex Lee, and environmentalist Dr. Sailesh Rao joined veterans to pay tribute to the lives lost.

Dr. Rao shared his personal experience of 9/11 and how it inspired his environmental advocacy and veganism programs. Veterans also shared their stories while public officials emphasized the importance of unity, resilience, and community service.

Dr. Anurag Mairal, Sewa Bay Area Chapter President, stated that their participation in the September 11 National Day of Service reflects their mission to promote selfless service and strengthen communities. He invited everyone to volunteer, attend educational sessions or reflect on this day to honor 9/11 and inspire future generations with a legacy of unity and service.

The event concluded with the planting of wildflower seeds representing growth, hope, and unity. Sewa International's efforts in commemorating the 9/11 National Day of Service serve as a reminder that through unity and selfless service, we can overcome any challenge.
