EAST ORANGE, N.J. - JerseyDesk -- On Wednesday evening, June 4th, East Orange entrepreneurs gathered at the Public Library for the eighth session of the city's Professional Development Workshop Series, titled "Funding Your Dreams in the Urban Hub."

Led by Pavel Manrique, Business Banker at JPMorgan Chase and proud son of East Orange, the workshop delivered practical insights into how small business owners can better prepare for financial growth and protection.

More than just a lecture, the session emphasized why financial fitness matters for business owners—and how it goes far beyond personal credit. Pavel explored the unique pressures and advantages business owners face, especially in urban communities where access to capital can be both a barrier and an opportunity.

He outlined three core pillars every business should build around:
  • Growth – Structuring finances to scale responsibly
  • Sustainability – Managing resources to ensure long-term success
  • Protection – Guarding against fraud and costly missteps

The session focused on three actionable areas:
  1. Business Credit Growth – Learning how to build and responsibly use business credit
  2. Sourcing Funding & Innovation – Exploring grants, loans, and alternative financing
  3. Fraud Prevention – Practical steps to shield your business from common threats

"Last night's session was incredibly eye-opening," said Joy Smith, owner of Angel Spot at 609 Central Avenue. "I left feeling empowered and ready to take action."

"This is what transformation looks like—knowledge applied and confidence ignited," said Anna D. Banks, (https://annadbanks.com/) workshop facilitator and executive coach.

Mark Cheatham, Business Development Manager for the City of East Orange, emphasized the program's continued success: "These workshops aren't just education—they're empowerment."
