PRINCETON, N.J., May 31, 2023 ~ ETS announced today that the GRE General Test will be shortened to less than two hours, making it the shortest and most efficient test among top professional, business and law school admissions test options. The changes to the test include the removal of the "Analyze an Argument" task in the Analytical Writing section, a reduced number of questions in the Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning sections, and removal of the unscored section. Test takers can expect to receive their official scores much faster, in just 8-10 days.
Amit Sevak, CEO of ETS said "The changes we're announcing today underscore the emphasis we place on keeping our customers at the center of all that we do. As we continue to introduce product innovations, we're committed to balancing two things – maintaining rigor and validity, while improving the test-taker experience."

Registration for the shorter test is now open for test dates beginning September 22nd 2023. To prepare for this new version of the GRE General Test, official GRE prep resources and practice tests designed for this streamlined version are available. Since it has similar question types (except for Analytical Writing), existing Official GRE Prep materials can still be used.
The score scales will remain unchanged so graduate programs can easily compare performance across cohorts before and after September 2023. The GRE will continue to be a valid, reliable and secure assessment of graduate readiness in less time. To learn more about these changes or create an account visit www.ets.org/gre/shorter or www.ets.org/mygre respectively.
